Abstract:
Discusses the issue of German business history in connection with the Holocaust, concluding that the goal of the historian is to understand how business played its role as part of the networks that brought on the disasters and horrors of the regime. The researcher needs to study the role of banks in the Nazi system, the way that system functioned in the economic sphere, and the problems of personal and business ethics and responsibility. Notes the lack of interest in this subject during the Cold War, and the opening of important archives after German unification. new research opportunities have undermined the claim of the German business community that it too was a victim of Nazism. The creation of a number of historical commissions has contributed to study of this topic. Studies of their wartime activities commissioned by business firms do not necessarily undermine the independence of researchers, but publication of research findings is crucial.
