Abstract:
Discusses works created in the late 1940s-60s by Israeli artists who were Holocaust survivors, and their reception by the Israeli artistic community. Most Israeli artists at the time focused on renewal in the Jewish homeland and rejected artworks portraying the "shameful" Jewish experience in the Holocaust. The survivor artists, however, needed to deal with their past experiences. Aspects of the Holocaust that they dealt with included "Muselmänner", the crematoria, and parting from relatives. Many artists used motifs from the Bible in their works, especially the sacrifice of Isaac. Some of the artists who were rejected by the Israeli artistic community emigrated to other countries where they were more readily accepted. Includes four pages depicting works by various artists.
