Abstract:
States that although the Austro-Hungarian Empire was multiethnic, in Austria proper the ruling nationality was German, and all who settled in Vienna from other regions had to adopt the German language and culture. This culture, however, was racist and antisemitic, whether in the nationalistic version of Schönerer or the Catholic version of Lueger. Thus, the Jews, even though they considered themselves German and were deeply immersed in German culture, and in spite of their contributions to that culture, could have no hope of ever being accepted by the dominant group.
