Abstract:
Discusses the ambitious French docudrama, "La Résistance", broadcast in 2008 and seen by 4.5 million television viewers. It's director, Christophe Nick, whose family helped rescue Jews during the Shoah, aimed to puncture the myth that resistance in France implied pro-Jewish action. Argues that the epic commentary accompanying the docudrama gives the opposite impression, namely that 250,000 Jews were rescued just because they were not renounced by the French. Passivity is thus confused with resistance. The docudrama genre, which fictionalizes history, amplifies this distorted message. The film's stated ambition, to "break taboos", which was used to promote the film, also contributed to veer it off course.
