Abstract:
Relates to an argument which arose amongst Hasidic rabbis themselves as well as with non-Hasidic rabbis, from the late 18th century to the mid-19th, as to whether the knife used by Hasidim for ritual slaughter of animals was sharp enough, depending on whether the blade was thin or thick, and on the extent to which it had been sharpened. The first Lubavitcher Rebbe came out with a statute (a "takanah") regarding which knife is to be used, which caused a furor of arguments amongst rabbis as well as "shochtim", until he eventually recanted. However, there were circumstances in which a Jew would not eat meat in the home of another Jew, and there was contention regarding where certain Jews could buy their meat. Apparently, this problem was resolved with the invention of the steel-bladed knife which was sharp enough for all.
