Abstract:
Compares Zvi Kolitz's "Yossel Rakovers vendung tsu Gott" (1946), Jerzy Kosinski's "The Painted Bird" (1965), and Binjamin Wilkomirski's "Bruchstücke" (1995). Argues that the reception of these three fictional texts, which have been read as though they were authentic testimonies of the Shoah, rests on biographic, historiographic, and cultural verisimilitude. Their authors correspond to general expectations concerning the witness as someone seeking anonymity; they situate their accounts within a large and "free" historical framework; and their texts show, both in their content and in their form, that the originators have embraced the cultural and metaphysical changes that have taken place in collective consciousness in the West.
