Abstract:
Surveying the history of the Jews in Germany during the 16th century, focuses on the role of their leader Joselmann of Rosheim. Gives details of Jewish life in Hesse, when Landgrave Philipp wished in 1538 to ameliorate the status of the Jews. Martin Bucer and six other Protestant ministers were opposed and claimed that Jews should be consigned to the lowest estate. Joselmann of Rosheim protested against Bucer's declaration, which had provoked physical attacks against Jews.
