Abstract:
Based on an interview with a non-Jewish Hungarian named Attila, who enrolled his daughter in a Jewish school in Budapest; analysis of his narrative shows that in doing so, Attila tried to cope with his father’s wartime past. During World War II, Attila’s father was a commander of a Jewish military forced labor unit, and thus participated in the persecution of the Jews during the Holocaust. He retained his antisemitism until his death in the 1960s. Attila also unconsciously harbors some anti-Jewish prejudices picked up from his father.
