Abstract: Describes the normality of assimilation in Wilhelmine Germany, noting that it could coexist with Jewish religion and the consciousness of being Jewish. However, this consciousness was heightened by growing antisemitism, causing especially younger Jews to leave German organizations in which they were no longer welcome and join Jewish-national ones. Traces the history of antisemitism in Germany before the First World War, commenting that although no Jew could escape it, its dangerous consequences were not recognized and it never diminished the patriotism of the prewar generation and its identification with fatherland and Kaiser.
