Abstract:
Labor camps were first set up near Bełżec in February 1940 by Hermann Dolp (working under Odilo Globočnik) for Jewish prisoners to dig trenches at the Soviet border. Reports on conflicts between Globočnik and the German civil authorities in the Lublin district. There were eight labor camps in the district; four of them were satellites of Bełżec. The Jewish communities were compelled to provide for the upkeep of the laborers, and there was tension between the Bełżec camp's Jewish council, the Lublin Judenrat, and other Judenrats in the district (which refused to contribute their share of the upkeep). Discusses the harsh living conditions at Bełżec and the satellite labor camps, which were closed in December 1940. Less than a year later, Dolp returned to Bełżec and it began to operate as an extermination camp.
