Abstract:
Discusses the impact of Holocaust-related episodes in Jabès' life on his writings after his emigration to France in 1957, and in particular on "Le livre des questions" (10 vols., 1963-73). The Egyptian Jewish writer's forced emigration from Egypt, antisemitic incidents in France, and French postwar responses to the Holocaust aroused a confrontation with personal memories regarding the Holocaust. Relates to the Egyptians' reactions to fascism and Nazism, Jabès' anti-fascist activities, meetings with Jewish refugees from Germany, his flight to Palestine, and the postwar information on the extermination process. Jabès adopted an ethical, rather than aesthetic, approach to his writing, thereby countering Adorno's statement regarding the limits of literary writing after Auschwitz.
