Abstract:
Contextualizes the antisemitic texts of Agobard of Lyon in the Carolingian period, and traces the relationship between the antisemitic accusations of the period and the later charges against Jews. Affirms that generally, in the Carolingian period, antisemitism was not accentuated, and that the anti-Jewish fanaticism of Agobard was not typical of that time. Despite that, a feeling evolved that the Jews were "strange". The period was characterized by a need to set clear boundaries to defend Catholicism. Thus began a theological and social hatred that would pave the way for the conversions and massacres during the Crusades, and for the later institution of ghettos in response to the threat of losing Catholic identity.
