Abstract:
The left-wing Chilean government, established in 1938, closed the country to Jewish immigration in 1940, giving in to pressure from the right-wing majority in the parliament. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructed its personnel in Europe to help persecuted Jews who had Chilean citizenship or who could produce any document relating them somehow to the country. Barros Ortiz was the Chilean ambassador to Germany in 1940-43. Although he belonged to the rightist camp and had sympathized with the Nazis, he intervened personally to help persecuted Jews, providing them with passports and helping them to leave for Chile. This article is partly based on Barros Ortiz's memoirs, "Recogiendo los pasos: Testigo militar y político del siglo XX" (1988).
