Abstract:
Discusses Spanish anti-Judaism of the 17th-18th centuries through analysis of writings by the priests Francisco de Torrejoncillo and Benito Gerónimo Feijoo. Torrejoncillo's "Centinela contra judíos puesta en la torre de la iglesia de Dios" (ca. 1674) expresses racist anti-Judaism, and is extremely violent against Conversos. Underlines the evolution of Spanish anti-Judaism reflected in the writings of Feijoo (18th century), an important philosopher and writer of the Spanish Enlightenment, whose works (e.g. "Teatro crítico" and "Cartas") contain many passages concerning the Jews. Feijoo rejects the notion of "limpieza de sangre" and other forms of obsessive hatred, remaining in the framework of "moderate" anti-Judaism.
