Abstract:
A paper presented at the "Remembering for the Future" conference held in Oxford, July 1988. Although the Orthodox Jewish communities in Europe were almost completely destroyed in the Holocaust, postwar religious Jewish leaders have under-reacted, rather than over-reacted, to the Holocaust. This lack of response can be explained by reluctance to introduce religious commemorations (such as days of mourning) and by a defense mechanism which avoids unanswerable religious questions. The Holocaust is viewed as an episode in the cycle of Jewish history of appalling catastrophes followed by rebuilding by the survivors. The Orthodox communities prefer to focus on the future and reconstruction, rather than on the past.
