Abstract:
Reflects on the central themes contained in the diary of Etty Hillesum (1914-1943); considers her one of the foremost young literary voices of Western European Jewry during the Holocaust period. Underscores the relevance of the theological, philosophical, and political issues discussed in the diary. Recounts her emotional and intellectual relationship with her mentor, Julius Spier, as well as her reactions to the deteriorating conditions of Dutch Jewry, which culminated in her deportation to Auschwitz, where she perished. Emphasizes Hillesum's spiritual awakening, despite her assimilated background, which can be perceived as her belief in a divine presence in her life.
