Kurzfassung:
Discusses development in the works of Margaliot on the reaction of Jewish organizations in Germany to Nazism in 1930-38, focusing on his Ph.D. thesis (Hebrew University, 1971). In his works, he initially referred to the organizations in general, but he soon realized that there was great variety among them, ranging from separatist Orthodox groups to secular assimilationists. He believed that they were unable to create an umbrella organization during the Weimar period because of this variety. Ca. 50% of German Jews lived in large cities, but they were less than 5% of the population in each city; each organization represented a relatively small number of Jews and each had its own ideology and agenda. In September 1933, under Nazi rule, the Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden was established as an umbrella organization, but its authority was limited by the organizations under it, creating much conflict; also, it underestimated the Nazi threat and the need for rescue work. Discusses contradicting opinions of other historians and Margaliot's reaction or lack of reaction to them.
