Kaltenbrunner (1903-1946) was born in Austria, and became a lawyer. In 1930 he joined the NSDAP, and the SS in 1931. In 1937, he was appointed chief of the underground Austrian SS. A year later, after the Anschluss, he was given command of all SS and police forces in Austria. In January 1943, Himmler summoned Kaltenbrunner to Berlin to succeed Reinhard Heydrich as chief of the RSHA. In this position, he directed the operations of the Nazi Secret State Police (Geheime Staatspolizei - Gestapo) and the Security Service (Sicherheitsdienst - SD). These operations involved the murder and mistreatment of prisoners of war and the civilian populations of occupied Europe, as well as the implementation of the Final Solution, a program that called for the physical extermination of the European Jews. After the war, Kaltenbrunner was tried at Nuremberg, and executed in October 1946.
