Kurzfassung:
Traces the precarious situation of Jews who worked as small merchants or craftsmen in the Marais district in Paris, based on records kept from 1940 on by the Commissariat général aux questions juives (CGQJ), in preparation for Aryanization. Many of these Jews had no work place, but worked from home or as street vendors, predominantly in clothing or food. A sewing machine, owned or borrowed, was often their most important tool. The machines were, however, requisitioned by the temporary administrators as part of the Aryzanization process, and many of the small businesses were liquidated. Concludes that these small merchants and craftsmen were the first Jews to be interned in Pithiviers and Beaune-la-Rolande in May 1941, and also the first to be deported from France to Auschwitz. Their deportation spelled the end to much of the small business in the Marais.
