Numerus clausus
Kurzfassung:
Disputes the dominant view in Hungarian historiography that the introduction of a "numerus clausus" in Hungarian higher education, a law that was repealed in 1928, was a transient episode. Argues, instead, that it prepared the way for more comprehensive discrimination against Jews, in practice and in principle, as Hungarian popular opinion accepted the view that Jews should be restricted in professional, as well as educational, matters. One example of this was the rise of racist professional organizations which collected statistics that could be used to justify anti-Jewish quotas.
