Kurzfassung:
Presents the biography and social background of the Russian writer Semyon Yushkevich (1868-1927), tracing his estrangement from his Jewish origins in Odessa and the introduction of controversial material in his works. Analyzes short stories and plays, written between 1817-1906, which portray negative Jewish characters, forced into depravity by cruel circumstances. Contends that these texts were not antisemitic, although they provided non-Jews with material for ascribing negative images of Jews to the entire Jewish community. However, Yushkevich's Marxist plays, written after 1906, may be seen as antisemitic, since only the rich Jewish capitalists are ethnically defined. Presents assessments by Jewish and non-Jewish critics of Yushkevich's work. Concludes that it is too rich in its depiction of Jewish life to be labelled as antisemitic, despite the anti-Jewish content of some of the plays.
