Kurzfassung:
Discusses the fact that until spring 1942 the Nazi media in Germany gave little information on the situation of European Jews. In the press, Jews were mentioned mainly for propaganda purposes, e.g. to point out negative Jewish influences throughout the world. Almost nothing was published about the fate of German Jewry, although there were reports on antisemitic laws in other countries, e.g. ghettoization and forced labor in Poland. From spring 1941, media reports mentioned deportations of Jews from other countries, but not from Germany; extermination was not mentioned. Contends that the secrecy concerning the fate of the Jews was due to fear that some Germans may object to the genocide. There were hints in the press concerning the genocide, but not how it was being carried out. From spring 1942 there were clear references to the genocide, since the Nazis wanted to implicate all Germans in their crimes and convince them that they were fighting for their lives.
