Kurzfassung:
In the wake of a symposium held in New York in 1998 on the recent debate about Sartre's "Réflexions sur la question juive" (1947), examines his silence concerning the fate of the Jews during the German occupation. Discusses whether Sartre profited from the 1940 Vichy laws barring Jews from civil service. He succeeded the dismissed Dreyfus-Le Foyer as a teacher of the prestigious preparatory course for the arts section of the École Normale Supérieure, a position which enabled him to dedicate his time to writing. Views Sartre's political engagement after World War II as a compensation for his wartime passivity. Concludes that his major work had a liberating effect on some Jews and also on Sartre himself, who projected his guilt onto the antisemites. Views his emphasis on the writer's responsibility as an expression of subconscious guilt. See the response to this article, by Jacques Lecarme, which appeared in "Les Temps Modernes" 609 (June-Aug 2000).
