Abstract:
This article aims to trace the short – though symbolic – history of the Academy of Jewish Sciences of Baron Gunzburg and to place it in its unique historical, social and educational context (St Petersburg, 1907-1914), a context which differentiates it from other institutions, also inspired by the rise of the Wissenschaft des Judentums in Europe. Curiously enough, this institute where illustrious figures – such as Simon Doubnov – have taught a handful of enthusiastic young students is still absent from the intellectual historiography of contemporary Judaism.
