Abstract: Discusses efforts made by Romanian rabbi and scholar Moses Gaster (1856-1939) on behalf of Romanian Jews to help in their struggle against legal discrimination. Having settled in London after his expulsion from Romania in 1885, he continued to be involved in all the stages of the emancipation of Romanian Jews. Publishes, in French translation, a letter sent by Gaster to the Romanian ambassador to Great Britain concerning the proposed British Aliens Act whose goal was to stop the emigration of foreigners because of the mass emigration of Romanian Jews in 1902. The letter also refers to the situation of the Jews in Romania - e.g. lack of citizenship, discrimination in schooling, professions, and military service - and warns about the negative diplomatic consequences of Romanian refusal to grant citizenship and civil rights to all Jews born in Romania. The letter had no effect; the Aliens Act was passed and Romanian Jews emigrated to other countries. The Jews were granted citizenship in Romania only in 1919.
Note: A Romanian version appeared in "Studia et Acta Historiae Iudaeorum" 2 (1997).
