Abstract:
Perón's government differentiated between antisemitic acts, which he banned, and antisemitic discourse which he allowed in internal politics, in consistence with the populist goal of national integration and inclusion of all social sectors. Argues that Perón was wrongly accused of antisemitism; he distanced himself from the pro-Axis, antisemitic members of the military government of 1943-46, and later took a stand against antisemitism. He nevertheless manipulated nationalist, right-wing groups, among them the Alianza Libertadora Nacionalista (ALN), in order to neutralize and suppress the leftist opposition, disregarding their antisemitic platform and activities (e.g. antisemitic demonstrations in Buenos Aires and Córdoba, 17 October 1945 and later). When the enemy of populism ceased to be the Left and the Jews, and the focus turned against the Catholic Church in 1954-55, ALN's Judeophobia was mitigated.
