Abstract:
Evaluates an in-service study course on the Holocaust conducted for Israeli Arab teachers. The teachers exhibited improved understanding of the Holocaust and increased interest in it. The main difficulty in Holocaust education for Arab teachers derives from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and from the teachers' privileging of the "Nakba" (the Palestinian catastrophe of 1948) over the Holocaust. The course was taught at the Center for Humanistic Education at the Ghetto Fighters Museum. Part of the end-of-course discussion focused on ways to teach the Holocaust to Arab students in Israel. Proposes that both the Holocaust and the "Nakba" be taught, but separately. The approach of the Center may also be applied to multicultural populations elsewhere, to help deal with problems of racism, discrimination, and xenophobia.
