Abstract:
Describes relatively unknown mass-execution sites in two forests, Blagovshchina and Shashkov near Minsk, where ca. 200,000 people, especially Jews from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia, were executed. There was also a camp serving the SS units which carried out the executions, conducted deportations of Soviet slave laborers, and fought the partisans, as well as a farm supplying the SS units in the Minsk area. In late 1942 and 1943, the SS Einsatzgruppen used the site mainly for the execution of Jewish transports by gassing or shooting. From early 1944, the SS destroyed all evidence of the executions with the help of Jewish and Soviet prisoners from Minsk, who were later executed. The site was not used for the extermination of local Jews or those from the Minsk ghetto.
