Abstract:
On the basis of eight letters sent by Henry James to Emma Lazarus in connection with her visit to England in 1883 (here published on pp. 54-62), claims that James' biting satire on immigrant Jews in the United States, "The American Scene, " is not fully representative of his attitude towards Jews. Argues that his letters to Lazarus demonstrate warmth and sympathy for her, as well as support for her visit to England to promote Jewish nationalism, which was motivated by her response to the Russian pogroms in 1881. Notes also James' hostile reaction to Julian Hawthorne's antisemitic novel "Gwendolen" and his support for Dreyfus.

Including the text of the letters.
