Abstract:
Covers the period from the 1880s-1930s, presenting a history of Jews in socialist movements and the rise of Jewish labor movements, especially on the Lower East Side in New York. In the 1920s-30s, due to disappointment in achievements and a waning interest in socialist circles, the Jews developed a flourishing Yiddish culture (i.e. establishment of schools, theatrical performances, newspapers, etc.). This culture made a rich contribution to American culture and reverberated for decades to come.
