Abstract:
Discusses changes in Christian theology regarding Jews and Judaism from the 1960s on, focusing on the Catholic Church. Relates the significance of the "Nostra Aetate" declaration and the subsequent "Guidelines" and "Notes." Major obstacles have been encountered in three fields: the Christian concept of mission, full acceptance of the common history of Judaism and Christianity, and the bond between the Jewish community and the Land of Israel. Notes progress in these fields, especially in recent statements by Pope John Paul II. But problems have also arisen - e.g., the convent at Auschwitz, Waldheim's visit to the Pope, and Edith Stein's beatification. Jews are wary of the Catholic Church's seeming desire to appropriate the Shoah or dejudaize this terrible catastrophe. Concludes that the movement toward better relations is irreversible despite oppositional trends in the Church and the fact that it is still confined to an intellectual elite.
