Abstract:
Traces the activities of Pamyat since its origins in 1985 based on reports in the Soviet press which began to appear in 1987. In April 1987, Pamyat seized control of the Moscow branch of an official body to preserve ancient monuments and in May held a number of demonstrations. Demonstrations at which antisemitic slogans were heard also took place in Leningrad in July, and the local branch is said to enjoy Communist Party support. Describes Pamyat's ideology, which combines devotion to Leninism with idealization of the tsarist state and blames all evils on a satanic Zionist-Masonic conspiracy. While many members of the establishment support them, their influential enemies include Aleksandr Yakovlev, who may have instigated the press campaign against them. Notes that Pamyat hopes to create ties with other anti-Zionist bodies in an international anti-Zionist movement.
