Abstract:
The collapse of centralized political authority in the USSR provided opportunities for the rise of new antisemitic groups such as Pamyat, which propounded in the early 1980s a conspiracy theory blaming the Jews and Freemasons for the destruction of Russia's cultural heritage. Discusses the fragmentation of Pamyat between 1987-91, and the ideological nuances (often contradictory or inconsistent) of the various factions - e.g. those led by Dmitrii Vasilyev, Valerii Yemelyanov, Igor Sychev, noting their hostility toward Jews. Analyzes the political potential of the Pamyat groups today and concludes that the obstacles facing them are likely to prevent them from entering the mainstream, but does not rule out this possibility altogether.
