Abstract: Discusses events on 30 May 1965, when a group of neo-Nazis, who had gathered for a rally of the Canadian Nazi Party, was met and routed by ca. 5,000 Jewish protesters, including many Holocaust survivors. The neo-Nazis, who were infiltrated by more than one group of Jews, soon ceased operations. The affair was a turning point for the Toronto Jewish community. There was originally a split between the establishment Canadian Jewish Congress and more militant groups, including survivors, about how to react to the neo-Nazis. In the face of widespread criticism, the Congress became more democratic and Holocaust survivors began to assume a role in the wider Jewish community. Pp. 117-124 in this issue contain a memoir by Holocaust survivor Michael Englishman (b. Engelschmann), "Neo-Nazis in Toronto", about the riot, in which he participated.
