Abstract:
Traces the dilemma of French Jewry today to Napoleon's emancipation, which gave the Jews rights as individuals but not as a community. Notes the importance of the Jews as a people and, hence, the centrality of Israel. Stresses how French republican ideology militates against the Jewish collective as an example of "communitarianism", viewed as a threat to the country. From the 1960s the Jews have been suspect as not being totally loyal to France. With the rise of French Muslim antisemitism and French anti-Zionism, the Jews feel vulnerable, uncertain about the present and the future. The Arab-Muslim vote in France may affect French attitudes toward Israel and toward French Jews' desire to express themselves as a community rather than as separate individuals, although many are afraid to publicly display any sign of their Jewishness.
