Kurzfassung: Discusses warnings made in the 1920s-30s by the journalist Pierre van Paassen regarding the fate that awaited Polish Jewry and the threat of Hitler to the Jews in Europe. In 1927 van Paassen visited Poland; he was appalled by the impoverishment of its Jews and by the antisemitism he saw there. Van Paassen urged that the Jews be brought to Palestine (opposed by Britain), the U.S. (prevented by immigration quotas), or to a temporary refuge. His articles were not printed due to criticism by American Jewish leader Louis Marshall, who argued that the Jews in Poland could not be helped, so they should make the best of it. Van Paassen's warning in 1934 of Hitler's intention to get rid of the Jews went unheeded, as did his prediction about the abandonment of the Jews by non-Jews in democratic countries. Attributes the suppression of the news of the Nazi mass murder of Jews, which was known in 1942, to the U.S. State Department and the American Jewish establishment.
