Kurzfassung: Stresses that this anti-Jewish disturbance was an incident in a chain of conflicts involving the "szlachta" (nobility), the Christian townspeople, and the Jews. The demands of the Jews to obtain legal status as Warsaw residents were supported by their patrons amongst the nobility, leading to conflict between the latter and the Christian burghers who feared Jewish competition and demanded the Jews’ expulsion. Both the Jews and the nobles thus had an interest in curtailing the town’s autonomy. The riots were also stimulated by the inactivity of the city authorities and by economic distress. After a series of anti-Jewish demonstrations, on 16 May 1790 a rumor that Jews had killed a Christian tailor provoked serious rioting. The Sejm proceedings show that opponents of burgher reform took advantage of these incidents to discredit their political movement.
