Abstract:
Both before and after the capture of Salonika by Greece, the Greek population of the city regarded the Jews as both economic competitors and an obstacle in the hellenization of the city. The entrance of the Greek army into the city in 1912 was accompanied by a pogrom; there was also a blood libel attempt in 1913. It was the government which, after 1912, protected the Jews (and the Muslim minority) in the hope that they would help to hellenize the city, if not ethnically then at least politically. The influx of 100,000 Greek refugees from Turkey into Salonika in 1923 changed the attitude of the authorities toward the Jews, who were no longer so significant.
