Abstract:
In April 1933, Stein wrote a letter to Pope Pius XI, asking him to condemn the antisemitism in Germany. It was only in February 2003, after a partial opening of the Vatican archives, that the text of the letter could be studied. It prompts reflection on the state of German society in the 1920s-30s, the place of the Jews in that society, and the career and fate of Stein (who died in the gas chamber at Birkenau in August 1942). Deals with the impact of the Nazi takeover on Stein's life and her attempts to fight Nazi antisemitism in the first months of the dictatorship. P. 19 presents an English translation of her letter to the Pope.
Note:
Includes an English translation of the letter (p. 19).
