Abstract:
In March 1839 the Jews of Meshed converted to Islam during a violent pogrom in which tens of Jews were murdered and their property looted. Discusses the account by Ya'akov Daylmanian, a descendant of Meshed converts, distributed in 1960 in Teheran, consisting of 92 mimeographed pages in Persian. Although there are numerous errors in the work, this is the most authentic history of the events now extant. Describes the initial "transfer" of Jews to Meshed in 1747 by the brutal Nadir Shah. Examines reasons for the outbreak of the riot in 1839, and Jewish reactions. Some converts assimilated, many fled to Herat, and most who remained in Meshed lived as Jews in secret. The Muslims were suspicious of them and called them "New Muslims" up to the middle of the 20th century; after 1948 most of them emigrated to Israel. Mentions attempts to harm the Jews in riots in 1891, 1902, 1904, and 1946, in which some were wounded and their property destroyed but the intent of the mob to kill was averted by intercession of the army.
