Abstract:
Examines the opposition in 1922 to Harvard University's attempt to limit its Jewish enrollment in view of the increasing number of young Jews entering institutions of higher learning. Describes Gentile students' responses to the Jewish presence at Harvard. President A. Lawrence Lowell contended that higher Jewish enrollment would generate more intense racial antagonism. Notes that some Jews supported this view. Explores reasons for American Jewry's intense reaction when Harvard was the last of the major universities to implement such a policy, and concludes that the reason was because Harvard established the norms and standards for other institutions.
