Abstract:
Analyzes and compares how the Shoah is dealt with in four Quebec French-language novels, published in the 1950s-60s: Gabrielle Roy's "Alexandre Chenevert" (1954), Yves Thériault's "Aaron" (1954), Gérard Bessette's "L'incubation" (1965), and Claude Jasmin's "Ethel et le terroriste" (1964). Shows similarities in the authors' treatment of the guilt associated with the Shoah, and discusses their techniques for legitimizing their portrayal of an event of which they have only indirect experience.
