Abstract:
Discusses the new orientation in 1936 of "Der Stürmer" on propagandistic reports denouncing Jewish owners, partners, and employees of companies in Berlin, where the paper had opened a branch the same year. The regularly published columns "Berliner Brief" and "Nachrichten aus der Reichshauptstadt" discredited and slandered Jewish businessmen in order to force them to sell, and presented lists of non-Jewish clients, labelled "Jew-friends". Jewish businesses were denounced for unhygienic conditions and bad treatment of non-Jewish employees. Information on Jewish businesses, their accounts, and customers were provided by the Nazi party, the police, and the Deutscher Arbeiterfront. Due to its wealth of information and its many informers, the paper became a source of intelligence even for Nazi district leaders and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Concludes that "Der Stürmer" accelerated and radicalized the destruction of Jewish professional life in Berlin.
