Abstract: The controversial painting in Sandomierz Cathedral depicting a "ritual murder" was commissioned, among other paintings, in 1710 by Revd Stefan Zuchowski from a French painter, Charles de Prevot. In 1997, a guide was overheard stating to a group of tourists that "this picture shows that the Jews kill Catholic children and drink their blood." An open debate erupted in the Polish press on this subject in the year 2000. Presents opinions expressed in various press items, from pledging to remove the painting (Revd S. Musial), even its burning (Prof. Swida-Ziemba), to leaving it as it is because of its "artistic values." Moderate voices called for accurate explanations to be posted in the Cathedral concerning this painting. Some defenders of the painting see in this discussion an attack on the Catholic Church in Poland. Stresses the importance of this issue in Poland, where there are still people who believe in "ritual murder." Concludes that the final decision lies with the bishop of the diocese of Sandomierz, who has not taken any stance and announced that he would not do so "until the matter is investigated."

Abstract: Surveys Catholic periodicals of the interwar period and analyzes their attitude to the Jewish minority. Presents demands made by the Catholic press concerning Jews, like boycott of the Jews, separation of Poles from Jews by introducing a numerus clausus and numerus nullus, and even introduction of closed ghettos for Jews. The complete exclusion of the Jews from Polish society was to be a step toward the final goal of emigration of the Jews from Poland. Catholic writers expressed strong opposition to Jewish settlement in Palestine and to the Zionist movement, considering these a threat to Christian rights in the Holy Land. Discussing extensively the need for "de-Jewing" Poland, the writers reflected on whether Christian teachings and the doctrine of loving one's neighbor are compatible with the anti-Jewish campaign. Shows how various journalists solved this problem. Readers of the Catholic press were persuaded that the struggle against the Jews was a legitimate act of self-defense. The number of antisemitic articles in the Catholic press grew substantially in the second half of the 1930s.
