Abstract:
In 1915 the governor of Georgia, John M. Slaton, commuted the death sentence of Leo Frank, a Jew accused of murder in Atlanta in 1913, to life in prison. The governor paid heavily for this courageous act - his administrative career ended abruptly. Shortly before his death in 1955, Slaton wrote a statement, presented here, explaining the reasons for the commutation. The text shows that Slaton was convinced of Frank's innocence. Pp. 325-330 contain a historical introduction.
