Kurzfassung:
Questions the evidence that the "birkath ha-minim, " a prayer in the daily Jewish liturgy, was understood by Christians during the 4th-5th centuries as an attack on them. Argues that Byzantine authorities were well aware of the nature of synagogue worship and would not have tolerated Jews regularly cursing all Christians. According to Epiphanius and the early writings of Jerome, the "nosrim" referred to in the blessing were Jewish Christians. However, in his Bible commentaries, Jerome accused the Jews of cursing the Christians daily in the synagogue as "Nazarenes." No other evidence for this belief exists, nor do the authorities seem to have taken any action. His evidence is even more suspect since Jerome frequently used calumnies and insults in polemics with other writers, including Christians, and he hated Jews violently and invented other lies about them.
