Abstract:
Examines some dreams described by Freud in his book "The Interpretation of Dreams", and points to the influence of antisemitism on their content. Freud found that the most pernicious aspect of this influence was in its power to dissolve his Jewish identity and his solidarity with fellow Jews. He was torn between unwitting collusion with anti-Jewish policies and self-reproach that ensued from impotent fantasies of revenge against aristocratic prejudice and power. The antisemitic pressures of Viennese life affected his political stance, his self-image, and his relation to his father. A recurrent problem for Freud was how to achieve his professional goals without colluding or wishing to collude with the antisemitism of the times. Concludes that Freud held that the road to overcoming antisemitism lies in overcoming censorship in the mind.
