Abstract:
Traces a conflict between Bruno Bauch, editor of the "Kant-Studien", and the Jewish philosophers Hermann Cohen and Ernst Cassirer. In 1916, a particularly sensitive period because of growing antisemitism in Germany, Bauch had published articles disputing Cohen's thesis of the role of Judaism in German culture; he asserted that Jews were a foreign element against which the culture must be protected. Under pressure from Cohen and Cassirer, Bauch was forced to resign his editorship; he blamed his resignation on "Jewish censorship" and later founded a rival nationalistic philosophical society. Analyzes Cassirer's (unpublished) refutation of Bauch, in which he affirms that philosophy must remain independent of the ethnic identity of the philosopher, and that German Jews, no less than other Germans, are rooted in German culture. Pp. 73-91 contain Cassirer's text, with annotations.
Note:
Includes an annotated version of Cassirer's text (pp. 73-87).
