Abstract:
Notes that victims of Nazi persecution writing in German for the German-speaking public have had to cope with indifference and latent hostility. Therefore, Ilse Aichinger and Erich Fried, both born in Vienna (Fried emigrated in 1938 after the murder of his father; Aichinger, a half-Jew, remained) clothed their experiences in fictional form. Only in the 1980s did both of them publish autobiographical sketches, but not complete autobiographies.
