Abstract:
20,000 Jews from Western Europe were deported to the Łódź ghetto in October-November 1941, among them 4210 in four transports from Berlin. These Jews, assigned in the ghetto to segregated housing collectives, died at a far more rapid rate than others, mainly because of their higher average age (almost 60% were over sixty) and because of their special difficulties in adjusting to the demands of their new situation. In May 1942 many of those who had survived the winter were sent to Chełmno and gassed. Only 23 are known to have survived the Holocaust.
